Opioid Use Disorder Summit to Educate Clinicians about Treating Patients for Opioid Use Disorder in a Variety of Settings

PlatformQ Health will host a series of live-online, interactive educational activities intended to help clinicians better address the challenges of the opioid crisis via its PainCareLive.com and PsychiatryCareLive.com learning channels. Despite increased awareness of opioid abuse and effective formulations to treat it, clinicians still face significant challenges in its management and patients with opioid use disorder continue to experience suboptimal outcomes.
Taming the Beast: Management of Opioid Use Disorder in Hospital and Outpatient/Community Settings will air Friday, May 4, 2018 from 12:00 – 1:30 PM ET in two parts: Opioid Use Disorder Across Outpatient/Community Settings and Opioid Use Disorder in Hospital Settings.
The series will equip clinicians with information on therapeutic approaches to managing opioid use disorder, what it is and what it isn’t, the benefits of medication-assisted treatment and the importance of treatment adherence, thus improving outcomes in patients with opioid use disorder. Importantly, clinicians will also have the opportunity to submit questions to the faculty during the live broadcast via the live Q&A tool or before its beginning on the program’s QBoard. Participants will:
- Review the principles of medication-assisted treatment
- Assess medications and new formulations available to treat opioid use disorder
- Identify patient non-adherence to prescribed treatment
- Learn to evaluate and assess patients with opioid use disorder
- Understand the licensure necessary to prescribe buprenorphine-based treatment
After the live broadcast, the 90 minutes of online education will be available for on-demand viewing and CME/CE for a year.
The one-hour noon session, Opioid Use Disorder Across Outpatient/Community Settings, will feature Genie L. Bailey, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University and Director of Research and Medical Director of Dual Diagnosis Unity at Stanley Street treatment and Resources and Peter D. Friedman, MD, MPH, DFASAM, FACP, Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Medicine at University of Massachusetts-Baystate, Chief Research Officer and Endowed Chair for Clinical Research at Baystate Health, and Professor of Quantitative Health Sciences at University of Massachusetts Medical School.
At 1:00 PM ET, Dr. Bailey will be joined by Joji Suzuki, MD, Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
“As the opioid crisis continues to worsen, there is a growing recognition that opioid-related ED visits and hospitalizations have increased dramatically. Unfortunately, once in the ED or hospital setting, many patients with opioid use disorder receive minimal to no treatment for the underlying illness that likely contributed to the hospital admission in the first place,” explains Dr. Suzuki, underscoring the importance of preparing clinicians for interactions with patients dealing with opioid use disorder. “Even though every hospital is equipped to manage soft tissue infections, for example, most hospitals do not offer any support for the opioid use disorder that caused the infection. The emerging body of evidence suggests that initiation of treatment for opioid use disorder in the general hospital setting is feasible and improves clinical outcomes. Indeed, hospitalizations and ED visits are critical opportunities to engage patients into treatment.”
In March, PainCareLive launched an educational program discussing the safety, efficacy and tolerability profiles of abuse-deterrent opioid formulations and their potential to reduce opioid misuse/abuse in treating patients with acute or chronic pain to improve clinician prescribing practices.
